Does Carl Sandburg mention Idaho in any of his poems?
Q. I swear, I think I have read his mentioning every state in the US except for Idaho (probably a couple others, but otherwise...). Does write much about it, at all?

A. I think that he wrote a lot about chicago. I do not think that he wrote on Idaho. Here is a website with a list of all his poems:

Nocturne In A Deserted Brickyard-Carl Sandburg?
Q. what do you feel the poem "Nocturne In A Deserted Brickyard" is about? I'm having trouble dissecting it and analyzing what is really is about. I know a Nocturne is an 18th century piece of musi made for a piano. That is as far as I have gotten. stuff of the moon Runs on the lapping sand Out to the longest shadows. Under the curving willows, And round the creep of the wave line, Fluxions of yellow and dusk on the waters Make a wide dreaming pansy of an old pond in the night. Carl Sandburg

A. First , nocturne also means night, or nightly...as I recall. Didn't look it up, sorry. Ahhh...just read this by Mr. Sandburg--it's a wonderful description of a pond at night, in moonlight. Can you see it now? the stuff of the moon is its light, the longest shadows come from willows, etc. Have you got it now? Look up "fluxions," but I'd guess ... well guesses aren't good homework. Another "hint:" the yellow and dusk on the waters are still the "lapping sand." My, he had a way with words! Good luck!

  • There are some people who can receive a truth by no other way than to have their understanding shocked and insulted.
    • In Reckless Ecstasy (1904)
  • Yesterday is done. Tomorrow never comes. Today is here. If you don't know what to do, sit still and listen. You may hear something. Nobody knows. We may pull apart the petals of a rose or make chemical analysis of its perfume, but the mystic beauty of its form and odor is still a secret, locked in to where we have no keys.

  • Back of every mistaken venture and defeat is the laughter of wisdom, if you listen. Every blunder behind us is giving a cheer for us, and only for those who were willing to fail are the dangers and splendors of life. To be a good loser is to learn how to win. I was sure there are ten men in me and I do not know or understand one of them. I could safely declare, I am an idealist. A Parisian cynic says "I believe in nothing. I am looking for clues." My statement would be : I believe in everything — I am only looking for proofs.
    • Incidentals (1904); this is sometimes paraphrased: "I am an idealist. I believe in everything — I am only looking for proofs."
