A memory card or flash memory card is a solid-state electronic flash memory data storage device capable of storing digital contents. These are mainly used with digital cameras, handheld and Mobile computers, mobile phones, music players, video game consoles, and other electronics. They offer high re-record-ability, power-free storage, small form factor, and rugged environmental specifications. There are also non-solid-state memory cards that do not use flash memory, and there are different types of flash memory.

There are many different types of memory cards and jobs they are used for. Some common places include in digital cameras, game consoles, cell phones, and industrial applications. PC card (PCMCIA) were among first commercial memory card formats (type I cards) to come out in the 1990s, but are now only mainly used in industrial applications and for I/O jobs (using types I/II/III), as a connection standard for devices (such as a modem). Also in 1990s, a number of memory card formats smaller than PC Card came out, including CompactFlash, SmartMedia, and Miniature Card. In other areas, tiny embedded memory cards (SID) were used in cell phones, game consoles started using proprietary memory card formats, and devices like PDAs and digital music players started using removable memory cards.

From the late 1990s into the early 2000s a host of new formats appeared, including SD/MMC, Memory Stick, xD-Picture Card, and a number of variants and smaller cards. The desire for ultra-small cards for cell-phones, PDAs, and compact digital cameras drove a trend toward smaller cards that left the previous generation of "compact" cards looking big. In digital cameras SmartMedia and CompactFlash had been very successful, in 2001 SM alone captured 50% of the digital camera market and CF had a strangle hold on professional digital cameras. By 2005 however, SD/MMC had nearly taken over SmartMedia's spot, though not to the same level and with stiff competition coming from Memory Stick variants, xD, as well as CompactFlash. In industrial fields, even the venerable PC card (PCMCIA) memory cards still manage to maintain a niche, while in cell-phones and PDAs, the memory card market is highly fragmented.

Nowadays, most new PCs have built-in slots for a variety of memory cards; Memory Stick, CompactFlash, SD, etc. Some digital gadgets support more than one memory card to ensure compatibility.

When looking for memory cards for digital cameras, does it matter which brand you purchase?
Q. I am currently shopping for a memory card for a Canon A540 and I noticed that there are many different brands. Does it really matter which one I purchase? Are any cards better than others?

A. Sandisk and Lexar come bundled with image recovery software that you copy onto your computer before you format the card. I am sure that the cards all pretty much perform the same, but these brands have a lifetime warranty for some of their products, so that makes me think they are built to higher standards. As far as day-to-day use, I have some generic and some of each brand I named and they all work. The contacts on the brand name cameras seem to have the equivalent of the "thunk" that you look for when you shut a car door to check it's quality, if you know what I mean. You don't wonder, "Is it in there right?" because it just feels right. I don't buy generics any more, though. I just end up getting them "with things" somehow. I just… [cont.]

There are many brands of SDHC memory cards available with enormous variations in price - is any brand better?
Q. I am treating myself to a new digital camera in the new year so am looking at the various accessories. The camera takes SDHC memory - when I look at this online the price differences between the different brands are stunning! I know when buying film for my old cameras they had different good/bad qualities depending on manufacturer and the buyers preference. Do SDHC cards work the same way? Can anyone make recommendations ro should I just go for the cheapest?

A. Take a look on dabs.com for a good deal, personally ive owned quite a lot of sd cards am allways upgrading camera and wanting more memory from my cards. I'd really recommend the sandisk extreme 3 range as they offer the quickest read/write rate available on the sd format (if your camera doesn't have continuous shooting up to the card being full you don't need this speed). I would also reccomend kingston and crucial, I would go for a sandisk card every time though after all they did invent the flash memory card.

Is there any advantage of any of these memory cards over the others?
Q. My laptop has a slot that will take SD, MS/Pro, MMC, or XD memory cards. It there any advantage of one over the other? Are "SD High Capacity" and "MS/Pro Duo" compatible with the originals? They are going to be on sale at Costco after Thanksgiving and I would like to pick up a 4 gig card for backups.
