The hobby of collecting includes seeking, locating, acquiring, organizing, cataloging, displaying, storing, and maintaining whatever items are of interest to the individual collector. Some collectors are generalists, accumulating merchandise, or stamps from all countries of the world. Others focus on a subtopic within their area of interest, perhaps 19th century postage stamps, milk bottle labels from Sussex, or Mongolian harnesses and tack. The items collectors collect may be antique, or simply collectible. Antiques are collectible items at least 100 years old; collectibles are less than antique, and may even be new. Collectors and dealers may use the word vintage to describe older collectibles. Most collectibles are man-made commercial items, but some private collectors collect natural objects such as birds' eggs, butterflies, rocks, and seashells. Collecting is a practice with a very old cultural history. The Egyptian Ptolemaic dynasty collected books from all over the known world at the Library of Alexandria. The Medici family, at Rennaisance Florence, was the first effort to collect art as private patronage, this way artists could be free for the first time from the money given by the Church and Kings; this citizenhip tradition continues today with the work of private art collectors. Many of the world ´s best museums - from the Metropolitan in New York City to the Thyssen in Madrid or the Franz Mayer in Mexico City - have collections formed by the generous collectors that donated them to be seen by the general public. GNU Free Documentation License Collecting food waste in kitchen for composting - what do you do? Q. We want to collect food scraps in the kitchen for composting in the yard. What is the best solution for collecting the food waste so that you can periodically take it out? We don't want something stinky or icky that might attract bugs. Are there any good products? Thanks! Asked by wesjen - Thu Nov 15 23:22:31 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. We got a small trash container that has a flip top and a bucket inside. It holds about one gallon. The container is black which is almost invisible in our kitchen. It ts the best solution we have come up with. Food scraps, coffee grounds, flower stems and cuttings go in and we empty every two or three days. No problems with odors or ants. Q. I want to start stamp collecting but I have no idea where to start. If you have any tips please tell me also. Asked by MDeeh - Sun Dec 21 22:12:58 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. Go through your mail, and remove the stamps that you can find there. Get a good book that explains all about collecting stamps, and how to remove them, and how to store them. After that, once you find your field of interest (there are so many different themes), you would focus on that area, and collect, and study all about them. The post office is a great place to get started. Join a local stamp club. Join an internet group -- you may be able to do some trades. And then you are on your way!
