How can I treat antique furniture for bugs?
Q. We bought an antique bookcase and later discovered it has bugs in it. They are eating the wood and leaving little piles of sawdust. They are very small and brown with little wings - they sort of resemble weevils. (I do not think they are termites.) How do we kill them? Do we have to get rid of the bookcase? And, are we in danger of them spreading to other pieces of furniture or our hardwood floors? Please help! Thanks.

A. The problem you have resembles woodworm, if there is powder dust from tiny holes, this is from the larvae and then they migrate through your entire house if not treated quickly allegedly. I would treat the suspect item with a proprietary woodworm treatment, or get rid quickly before infestation occurs.

Where do I go to get an antique trunk restored?
Q. My grandmother has an antique trunk (her grandmother's hope chest) that she's looking to get restored/refurbished. Its made of metal, and has some leather straps that need replacing. Also, the inside is just carboard and I think she'd like to put fabric in it. What kind of business should I take this trunk to in order to get it fixed up? I know nothing about antiques, and have absolutely no idea where to begin.

A. First thing to do is find out the value. Any value it has will be destroyed by doing anything to alter it. If it has no antique value call an interior decorator. They will know if there is anyone around that does that type of thing.

What is the best way to teach yourself about antiques?
Q. I love the antiques roadshow and things of that nature. I would like to learn more about antiques (Not to be a PRO)! I would just like to learn more from books or websites or whatever. I can't go to classes because I'm kinda housebound but would still like to learn more. Thanks! Yes I know I said I wanted to learn from books but I was hoping you could recommend some specfic ones! :)

A. There are some good groups on MSN and Yahoo you can join to learn from others with same interest. Figure out what you're into first to narrow your focus like is it dolls, collectibles, furniture, paintings? Then concentrate on learning about them otherwise its overwhelming. Most experts have an area they are really good at and find others that are good at each category.
