An antique (Latin: antiquus; old) is an old collectible item. It is collected or desirable because of its age, rarity, condition, utility, or other unique features. It is an object that represents a previous era in human society.

Antiques are usually objects which show some degree of craftsmanship, or a certain attention to design such as a desk or the early automobile. They are bought at antique shops, or passed down as an estate. Some valuable antiques can be bought from antique dealers and auction services or purchased online through websites and online auctions. Antique dealers are often members of national trade associations, many of which themselves belong to CINOA, a confederation of art and antique associations across 21 countries, representing 5000 dealers.

In history

Any historical museum makes a considerable use of antiques in order to illustrate historical events and give them a practical context. Just about any object can become an antique if it survives long enough, but value of an antique in the market place is determined by its appeal and social acceptance. For example museums exist of Ephemera, that is of objects and items that would normally be thrown away, such as packaging and advertising flyers and posters.

How do you move an huge antique safe? Or how do you just get rid of one?
Q. The institution I work for may take over a building soon and there is a huge antique safe in what would be my office. We may just want it moved out of the way or to get rid of it completely. What should we do? How expensive is it to move a safe? Do people buy/collect old safes?

A. Where are you located at and how large is the safe...I might be interested in taking it off your hands if you are close enough! :D And YES people collect old safes. See this site for professional safe removal contractors. They should be able to help you remove and get rid of an unwanted safe. Remember that large safes are VERY expensive so resale is always an option. You can EASILY get $10,000 dollars or more out of a working vault safe.

How much should I sell my working antique 1953 Coronado refrigerator?
Q. I have a antique beautiful, running great side by side Frost Free 1953 Coronado refrigerator and received a new side by side to match our kitchen appliciances. So now I would like to sell it but I'm afraid of selling it for too cheap. Please does any one know of a good asking price for it. It is truly in beautiful condition and is not rusted at all! Any ideas of price or what I should do?

A. If it works well as you say, I suppose $25- $50 would be fair, but not many will be interested because the older the fridge, the more electricity they used, and even 15 year old parts are impossible to find when it does break down. Good luck though.

How do I make wood have that cracked antique look?
Q. I want to make a bathroom medicine cabinet that is crummy looking wood look like an old white cracked antique.

A. i tried this on my draws and the effect was very good. Sand down the wood. Paint it a cream colour on the bass first.Let it dry then get a thick candle and rub the areas were you think there would be signs of aging ie edges joins crackes just rub as much of it with candle as you like.Next paint it all with white paint. Then when its dry get some sand paper and rub down gently the areas that you had put the candle.Just rub enough for the colour cream colour to show. After varnish gloss or matt to prevent any more paint coming off. If you don`t like my idea then just use a product called Scumble Glase.dose the same affect but costs more.good luck.
