A military is an organization authorized by its country to use force, usually including use of weapons, in defending its country (or by attacking other countries) by combating actual or perceived threats. As an adjective the term "military" is also used to refer to any property or aspect of a military. Militaries often function as societies within societies, by having their own military communities, economies, education, medicine and other aspects of a functioning civilian society. The profession of soldiering as part of a military group is older than recorded history itself. Some of the most enduring images of the classical antiquity portray the power and feats of its military leaders. The Battle of Kadesh in 1274 BC was one of the defining points of Pharaoh Ramesses II's reign and is celebrated in bas-relief on his monuments. A thousand years later the first emperor of unified China, Qin Shi Huang, was so determined to impress the gods with his military might that he was buried with an army of terracotta soldiers. The Romans were dedicated to military matters, leaving to posterity many treatises and writings as well as a large number of lavishly carved triumphal arches and columns. In the modern era, world wars and countless other major conflicts have changed the employment of the militaries beyond recognition to their ancient participants. Empires have come and gone; states have grown and declined. Enormous social changes have been wrought, and military power continues to dominate international relations. The role of the military today is as central to global societies as it ever was. From Wikipedia under the

Q. My husband has his own business and he is always busy at work. He has been working extra hard these days because of the recession. We always get in fights before he's so busy all the time, then I wonder: how do military wives deal with it? Their husbands are away for months at a time, and overseas. Please tell me (especially if you are a military wife.) I would really appreciate it it. Thanks. Asked by Trix Is My Kryptonite - Mon Aug 3 15:19:56 2009 - - 10 Answers - 0 Comments A. You realize it will happen. You have to stay busy. Work, go to school, volunteer your time, start a new hobby etc. Each person learns to cope in their own way but the military offers lots of support groups. Answered by lconnor65 - Mon Aug 3 15:24:54 2009 How would military enlistment numbers be affected if trade school and college were prepaid? Q. Knowing many military enlistees join for lack of clear career and educational goals in high school, what if high school career counselors all did their jobs better and post-secondary education was fully funded (disregard how, for now)? How would this affect military enlistment stats? This question is not about commission candidates or those who'd wanted nothing else but to serve. It's only about the confused or disenfranchised who see no better alternative. Asked by Muhl T. Purpas - Thu Sep 24 20:43:16 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. I don't doubt that the number of enlistees would go down, but probably not nearly as much as many people would like to think. After many years in the military, the diversity of motivation surprised me. Some I know join for family tradition, or for patriotism. Some want to see the world. Some join because they want to do something meaningful and positive, to help people. Some join because all their friends joined. Some join because they are thugs and just want to kill people. Some, like myself, got it in their heads that they could be heroes and save people. Some do it because they're struggling financially and need the money. Some do it for the government benefits, like retirement, VA, educational benefits, after-service job… [cont.] Answered by Walter - Thu Sep 24 21:12:06 2009 What military entitlements are allowed to the spouse after a divorce?
Q. Married for almost 13 years now but the wife now wants a divorce. The entire marriage was during my military service. I am due to retire in just a few years now. I know that once I am retired, she is entitled to half of my retirement pay. But what else? Will she be able to still have an ID card or access to medical/dental? If my wife also has custody of our kids, what entitlements are the kids allowed to receive? Thanks for any answers. Asked by Eric H - Sat Nov 28 04:15:20 2009 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments A.
