The definition of an artist is wide-ranging and covers a broad spectrum of activities to do with creating art, practicing the arts and/or demonstrating an art. The common usage in both everyday speech and academic discourse is a practitioner in the visual arts only. The term is often used in the entertainment business, especially in a business context, for musicians and other performers (less often for actors). "Artiste" (the French for artist) is a variant used in English only in this context. Use of the term to describe writers, for example, is certainly valid, but less common, and mostly restricted to contexts like criticism.

What rap artists would you like to see inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame?
Q. They don't have to be old rap artists. What artists now would you like to see inducted later? RHH2: Who's the most influential rap artist ever?
Asked by Azi Haka - Sun Sep 27 11:38:37 2009 - - 6 Answers - 2 Comments

A. Public Enemy Rakim KRS One Kool Keith De La Soul NWA A Tribe Called Quest 2pac Wu Tang Clan Outkast All very influential in their own ways. RHH2: Rakim. He changed how people rapped. Before him every rapper would just shout their lyrics in a nursey-rhyme style. Like Run DMC, Beastie Boys, Furious Five, etc.

How does music artists after composing the music play the musical instruments?
Q. Though the music artists invent aesthetically the music (designing and composition), do they themselves play the instruments or instrument players play the music according to the artist's composition? And suppose if the hired instrument player creates a better version of the artist's original composition does the hired instrument player given the credit as well.

A. Huh? If any ' composer' CAN'T play the instrument the song was written on or for... then they didn'T write the music. I've seen a lot of PHONIES who copy some obscure piece of music and then try to pass it off as their own.. but when they can'T PLAY IT.. then I know they didn'T write it. I suspect you don't really understand how music is composed OR played.

How has the work of Jackson Pollock influenced artists who came after him?
Q. How has the work of Jackson Pollock influenced artists who came after him? Why is he considered an important artist?
Asked by bad_boyz0218 - Fri Sep 5 12:12:21 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. He is important because liberated what artists could do--spray a canvas with paint dripping from a can, etc. He encouraged the controlled use of the non-deliberate: Pollock doesn't plan where every splatter and splot goes; the artist becomes the medium through which art is created rather than being a Godlike manipulator. He also brought into question the form of art. Cut an enormous Jackson Pollock picture in two and you have two Jackson Pollock pictures. That forces the viewer to consider the arbitrary, as does his technique.
