Is it rude to give an Asian friend a secondhand gift from Europe even if it's of good quality?
Q. Quality glass or porcelain items sold in European shops tend to be very expensive, and the cheaper knock-offs are all made in China and probably available all over Asia at a fraction of the price. Would it be rude to gift someone from Asia with a secondhand item of quality, though not old enough to be an antique? Does it make a difference that it doesn't come in the original boutique packaging?

A. No it is never rude to give a gift to a friend. However, I'd make sure they have an interest in quality glass or porcelain from Europe. If they don't, then I'd rather get them something they do have an interest in. Personally I like unique gifts that the area is known for. For example, German coo-coo clock or beer stein. In Prague, the crystal. Items like that. If your friend collects glassware, or we are talking about simple items like a flower vase, it would never be rude to give them a gift--even if they could have bought it cheaper themselves. Gifts are from the heart and something you thought they would enjoy.

What do you think of this poem?
Q. Porcelain Doll A perfect little girl, the picture of grace Everyone is fooled when they look at her face They think she's content and worry free Not caring at all about who she should be. She hides inside of herself, protected by a shell Pretending she's fine so that others can't tell. "If they knew the truth, that i am really unsure, Then they would take care of me, trying desperately to find a cure. I can't be a burden, so i'll just lie, Laughing it off when i really want to die." Her bright shiny eyes only sparkle with glass And her painted red lips never let true feeling pass. Is this really the girl that she wants to be? Why can't she say, i just want to be me. Because she is scared of what others will do Will she be accepted or… [cont.]
