Antiques Encyclopedia Article

An antique (Latin: antiquus; old) is an old collectible item. It is collected or desirable because of its age, rarity, condition, utility, or other unique features. It is an object that represents a previous era in human society.

Antiques are usually objects which show some degree of craftsmanship, or a certain attention to design such as a desk or the early automobile. They are bought at antique shops, or passed down as an estate. Some valuable antiques can be bought from antique dealers and auction services or purchased online through websites and online auctions. Antique dealers are often members of national trade associations, many of which themselves belong to CINOA, a confederation of art and antique associations across 19 countries, representing 5000 dealers.

Purpose

In history

Any historical museum makes a considerable use of antiques in order to illustrate historical events and give them a practical context. Just about any object can become an antique if it survives long enough, but value of an antique in the market place is determined by its appeal and social acceptance. For example museums exist of Ephemera, that is of objects and items that would normally be thrown away, such as packaging and advertising flyers and posters.

As heirloom

The term "antique" is pejorative in some instances to describe something passed down from generation to generation.

Where can I find an antique appraiser on the internet?*
Q. I have a picture of a dining room hutch that is my moms. She believes that it my be antique and would like to find the value of it. I am wanting to find some one on the internet that I can show the picture to and maybe they can help me. I also have some other items but don't have any pictures of them yet.

A. Are you looking to identify the items or are you looking for a dollar value? There is a big difference in the information that could be had between the two expectations. There is no way to get an 100% accurate or honest appraisal from the internet on furniture just because condition cannot be accurately displayed from a snap shot. So much of condition is revealed by inspecting closely, touching, etc. And in fact there are small details that are very telling. Not to mention that unlike a Kewpie doll, there were manufacturers as well as people making them on small scales locally. If you are looking for someone to identify the style, than that information could be had easily and quickly had.. But as far as dollar value - it is going to… [cont.*]

How do you become an antique dealer?*
Q. Im 14 years of age and im interested in antiques Ive been to many auctions and learnt most of the basics. Can you recommend any items to start collecting at my age?And how do I become an antique dealer or collector? Thanks

Asked by James - Wed Aug 29 08:07:38 2007 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. To become a collector you must start buying items that you would like to collect. Find things that you like. To become a dealer I would say you should start by finding good deals on items. You must be able to buy the item for a good price in order to mark the price up to make a profit. It will take a lot of research to be able to know what an item is worth. At your age, I would suggest to try to sell a few items here and there on Ebay. Good luck.
