An antique (Latin: antiquus; old) is an old collectible item. It is collected or desirable because of its age, rarity, condition, utility, or other unique features. It is an object that represents a previous era in human society.

Antiques are usually objects which show some degree of craftsmanship, or a certain attention to design such as a desk or the early automobile. They are bought at antique shops, or passed down as an estate. Some valuable antiques can be bought from antique dealers and auction services or purchased online through websites and online auctions. Antique dealers are often members of national trade associations, many of which themselves belong to CINOA, a confederation of art and antique associations across 21 countries, representing 5000 dealers.

Purpose

In history

Any historical museum makes a considerable use of antiques in order to illustrate historical events and give them a practical context. Just about any object can become an antique if it survives long enough, but value of an antique in the market place is determined by its appeal and social acceptance. For example museums exist of Ephemera, that is of objects and items that would normally be thrown away, such as packaging and advertising flyers and posters.

A. Antique Dealing by Matthew Ohms is a full-featured guide on how to buy and sell antiques for profit. It covers antique valuation & pricing, auction tips, profit potential and the legal aspects of buying and selling antiques. While the law varies from place to place, to be considered an antique a car or other piece of machinery needs to be 25 years old, toys need to be 10 years old, and other items at least 50-100 years old. The reason for this is that items like cars and machinery go through a lot more wear and tear than a chair or a desk. So for it to last 25 years is truly significant.

What is the difference between Duncan Pfife and Duncan Phyfe antique furniture?
Q. What is the difference between Duncan Pfife and Duncan Phyfe antique furniture? Is one worth more than the other? I'm looking a drop leaf table in great condition, but I know nothing about antiques. The tag says Duncan Pfife, but on ebay I only see Duncan Phyfe. Is there a difference? Thanks in advance.

A. Sorry to say, the difference is in the spelling only. You might want to do a little more research, in case the table is faux, and purposely mispelled.
